San Yi Presbyterian Church
Designed with the concept of a "mountain city," the church is planned in harmony with the terrain contour, within a 1700-ping (approximately 5625 square meters) floor area. It accommodates various functions, including the main hall, study room, restaurant, classrooms, library, sports field, kindergarten, dormitories, and a small chapel. The structures are layered and arranged like stacked stones, fitting together harmoniously. Winding pathways facilitate interactions between people, allowing for chance encounters and creating a "slow architecture" park-like space.
The church features carefully designed openings to create a light-filled atmosphere in the corridors. Leading people to a flatter large grassland at the back, one end of the corridor aligns with the cross of the small chapel, while the other end echoes with the cross of the bell tower.
The small chapel stands out as a highlight of the project. Inspired by childhood memories of "kang yao," the architect intends to use local pebbles to build a small gathering place for 60 people. The roof is made of curved mirror stainless steel, making use of the natural topographical differences. It includes an outdoor podium at the front and a half-underground service space at the back. During the night, the interior gathering's light shines through the perforated walls, emitting a faint yet warm glow.
