Tainan Nanying Observatory

The site of this project is located on a mountaintop platform, surrounded by steep slopes on all sides except the south, where it faces the East-West direction. To avoid disrupting the original terrain and landscape, the main body of the building is designed to follow the contour of the land in a linear distribution. The observatory dome is separated from the main structure, serving not only as a visual focal point but also to prevent floor resonance from affecting the observation functions.

The architectural configuration conforms to the terrain, arranged in an East-West direction, and adapts to the gradual changes in the topography. The northern part offers a view of the Moon World landscape, while the southern part overlooks the Zengwen River. The building itself is also a focal point for the mountaintop view. The observatory dome is positioned as the highest point in the complex to ensure unobstructed observation sightlines. Additionally, an outdoor observation platform is set up on the mountaintop to provide space for outdoor observation activities.

The southern wing mainly consists of open public spaces, such as exhibition halls and plazas, while the northern wing houses classrooms, research rooms, and observation rooms. The two wings are connected by a corridor that links the entrance plaza of the building and the outdoor observation platform. The distinct spatial configuration enhances the sense of direction and clarity of the space.

The second floor houses research rooms and rest areas, separating research activities from public events. There is also a flat roof observatory platform, where the roof can be movable and opened, equipped with small telescopes for the public to operate. Another observation platform connects to the flat roof observatory platform.

The main structural material is exposed concrete walls that harmonize with the rocky terrain, while decorative materials use wood and warm-toned stones for contrast, adding richness and layers to the space. The design employs natural and low-pollution materials to achieve environmental protection and energy efficiency.

The main goal of this design is to provide a place for primary and secondary school students and the general public to get close to astronomical observation and learn and exchange knowledge about astronomy. Additionally, the overall architecture and environment seek to be in harmony with the local ecology, geography, and topography, showcasing the artistic, technical, and social aspects of the building. Especially during day and night, it aims to demonstrate the self-evidence of architecture and its close integration with human activities and the environment, fostering interaction. Life continues, and energy is endless.
